24 August 410: Rome is overrun by Visigoths under King Alaric I who breached the gates of Rome and sacked the city for three days. This was the first time in nearly 800 years that Rome had fallen to a foreign enemy

The Battle of Zorndorf took place on 25 August 1758 during the Seven Years' War, between Russian troops commanded by Count William Fermor and a Prussian army commanded by King Frederick the Great. During the battle, Frederick famously took a regimental standard and led an attack himself, rallying his troops.
